Apple Sauce:
The kiddos had fun making applesauce!  Its always funny to see how some of the kiddos LOVE the applesauce and can't get enough of it and others want nothing to do with it.  I got each of them to at least try it.

Creation Lab:
The kiddos got a chance to visit our new creation lab this week and learn the expectations of the lab.  They will begin hands on learning this week on Thursday when they practice engineering and creating different things.  I'll keep you posted as to how it goes.  Should be a lot of fun!

Share Homework:
Thank you for helping your child complete their share homework this week.  Please encourage your child to use the sight words we've been learning and to draw a colorful picture to go with it.  Please see next week's share topic by clicking on the Homework tab.

Jog-a-thon:
Our annual jog-a-thon will take place September 11.  This is a fun event that helps raise money for our classroom.  As I mentioned at orientation, the funds I receive for supplies and materials is quite limited.  The jog-a-thon allows the kiddos to help raise extra money for our classroom by asking friends and family for donations.  I will be sending the paperwork home this week and hopefully your child can be a part of helping to raise extra money for our classroom!  I definitely appreciate your support!

Jog-a-thon Prizes:
I thought it would be fun to include some prizes for the students who participated in the jog-a-thon.  These prizes are cumulative, so your child can earn as many as they can.  Please do not feel that donations are mandatory for the jog-a-thon.  Your child will still participate in the jo-a-thon regardless of donations.  The prizes will be for the students who raise donations.
Students who raise:
$10- Earn an extra recess
$20- Earn a candy and a pencil
$30- Earn a free kids meal from Chilis
$40- Earn a popsicle party
$50- Earn a pizza party
$60- Earn a free book
Most money raised will win a mystery prize worth $10.

Thanks for your support with this fundraiser.  This is the only fundraiser we do whose money goes directly to our classroom this year.  Remember, prizes are cumulative. If collecting donations from family and friends, I recommend just collecting flat donations.  Please send any collected donations on or before September 11th.  All money is deposited to the district office and will not be held by me.

Share Homework:
Several students did not bring their share homework last week.  Remember, this is a weekly part of homework that is due Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.  The topic is different each week.  Please help your child get into the habit of consistently completing their homework.  When your child reaches first grade, they will have consequences for not completing their homework.  Thanks for your support.  The share homework topic can be found by clicking on the homework tab.  If you are on your mobile phone, you need to scroll all the way down to the bottom of this page and click on 'web version' in order to access the tabs on the website.  Please contact me if you are having trouble finding the homework.

Book Fair:
The Book Fair is happening this week at Cram.  You can take your kiddo to visit the book fair or you can send money in a sealed envelope labeled with your child's name to school on Wednesday and I will take them at 1:00 on Wednesday afternoon.  Please understand that I do not plan to take them again after our Wednesday slot.  If you send money on Thursday or Friday, I will not be taking classtime to go back to the Book Fair.  You may send your child's envelope Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday and I will hold onto it until we go.  Keep in mind, there are toys and trinkets for sale at the book fair.  If you only want your child to purchase books, please label the envelope 'BOOKS ONLY' and we will be sure they do not purchase trinkets and toys with their money.  Any questions, please message me.

Ice Cream Social:
This will take place in the MPR Thursday evening at 5:00.  The book fair will be open at this time if you prefer to shop with your child.  Unfortunately I can not make it to this event because my boys have cross country practice and pick up is at 5.

Jog-a-thon:

Paperwork:
If you have not yet returned your child's e-card, Acceptable Use Policy Form, or other important papers that came in your kiddos orientation packet, please do so ASAP.  These are required.  The Acceptable Use Policy Form allows your child to use the classroom laptops and this will be a regular routine for us.  I can not let them use the computers without this signed form.

Sight Words:
Just to clarify, a red Sight Word book was in your child's orientation packet.  Please begin practicing List 1.  You will notice there is a front and back side to each list.  Once your child can successfully read both sides of the list 1, place the red book in your child's Red Folder and I will test them on List 1.  I do not test the words in order from top to bottom to prevent memorization of lists so it would be helpful if you skipped around on the list to ensure your child KNOWS the words.  There is no time frame on this.  Please practice daily as needed.  The students will be at different levels here.  I'm looking to see progress throughout the year.  Please feel free to ask me any questions if you are not sure.

First Week:
We had a great first week together!  The students did a great job and are beginning to learn routines.  I will continue to provide support in the mornings helping students learn how to unpack their backpacks as well remain consistent with routines I have set in place throughout the day.  It won't be long before they begin to be more and more independent.  You can support this at home by giving your child 1-2 step directions and expecting them to follow through with them independently.  For example, ask them to put their shoes in their closet and then brush their teeth.  I am really enjoying getting to know each of them and I can tell it is a great group this year!

Last Week

Important Dates:

June 6: Last Day or school/minimum day/Kindergarten Celebration

Kindergarten Field Day:
This will begin right away on the last day of school.  We need about 5 board approved parent volunteers for this event.  We will have stations set up and all kinder students will rotate through the centers.  We will finish up field day with a kindergarten picnic on the playground. .  Please send in your item by this Tuesday or Wednesday.  Thanks for your support!

Kindergarten Celebration:
I would love for every student to have at least one adult present for the kindergarten celebration.  YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE BOARD APPROVED TO ATTEND!  Everyone is welcome to come and it can be quite crowded.  It is a special event that you won't want to miss.  This will begin at 10 am in the classroom on June 6.  I will unlock the gate by our classroom door.

Report Cards:
Report cards will come home on the final day of kindergarten.

Summer:
I can not stress how important it is for your child to continue reading daily over the summer.  If they do not, they will regress and could possibly begin 1st grade reading below grade level.  Be sure they are reading their book boxes at home and check the library for leveled readers.

Week of April 1st

Welcome back!  Hope everyone enjoyed their 2 weeks of Spring Break!  This is the ending stretch of kindergarten.  Our big goal is to reach a level 5 reading level.  Students who are below this are usually lacking sight words.  If you notice your child is reading below a level 5 (it is on the back of their guided reading book), now is the time to start diligently working on sight words, rereading their guided reading books as much as possible and working each night at least 10 minutes on learning sight words.

This week:
Sight Words: all, when, some
Theme: Spring
Story Element: Characters/Setting
Comprehension Strategy:  Connections
Math:  Comparing Numbers
Writing: Narratives
Phonics: Jj
Phonemic Awareness Skill:  Medial Sounds

Pennies 4 Patients:
We will begin a whole school fundraiser this month, stay tuned!

I have contacted the parents whose names were drawn from the lottery.  If you did not get a message from me via Bloomz, your name was not chosen.  Please keep in mind that you are welcome to volunteer in the classroom at anytime.  Just let me know.

Homework:
We have a very mischievous leprechaun who has made his way into our classroom!  We have decided we need some leprechaun traps to catch him!  Please see your child's red take home folder that came home Friday for this week's homework.  Have fun and be creative!  This will be your child's only homework this week.

Spring Break:
It is extremely important that your child continues to practice sight words and reading daily through out the break.  Remember, our goal is to have your child reading at a level 5 or higher before the end of the year.  This level can be found on the back of their guided reading book.  If they are reading below a level 5, it is usually because they are not recognizing sight words.  Please help your child reach this level to ensure success in first grade by working hard on their sight words.  Reading folders will be coming home next week now that I am done with district assessments this week.
